New Filmmakers from Spain 2013
Short Film Winner: TRYOUTS (LA PRUEBA) Synopsis: After being rejected from cheerleading tryouts because of her headscarf, Nayla, a teenage Muslim American girl, will have to find her own way to follow her dream without compromising her beliefs. Director: Susana Casares Susana Casares is a Spanish filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Before moving to LA, she completed a BA in Translation and Interpreting and a BFA in Fine Arts with a special focus in Video Art and Photography. In 2012 she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, having received a scholarship from La Caixa Foundation. Winner of the Emmy's Foundation prestigious College Television Award in Drama, her narrative and documentary work has been shown in festivals and art institutions around the world. Susana received both the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Award and the Mary Pickford Award for two consecutive years, as well as the support of institutions such as the Tribeca Film Institute and IDFA. She is a Berlinale Talent Campus participant, a Telluride FilmLab fellow and a Film Independent fellow. Susana has just been showcased in Variety's Cannes edition as one of the 10 Spanish talents on the rise. Before moving to Los Angeles, she was Head of Production at Docs Barcelona Pitching Forum and she taught Art History at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She currently teaches Film Production at the School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA.
Short Film Runner Up: US (NOSOTROS) Synopsis: Girl and boy live fragmented divided by the same question. Director: Alex Lora Born in Barcelona, Alex studied Filmmaking in New York as a Fulbright scholar. He has worked internationally as script analyst, editor, cinematographer, writer and director. During the last years Alex has combined these activities teaching in prestigious universities such Elisava, Blanquerna or University of Barcelona. His work has obtained more than 80 awards and has been screened in over 300 festivals in more than 40 countries. Among other important venues Alex has participated in the official section of Sundance (Odysseus' Gambit), Berlinale Talent Campus, Cannes Short Film Corner (Godka Cirka and (En)terrats), and has been one of the final nominees for the Oscars-Student Academy Awards (Us) and two times for the Catalan Academy Awards (Odysseus' Gambit and (En)terrats). 2013 Jury members

Was the Personal Assistant to the Spanish director Bigas Luna and is the director of award winning short films like "Reacción" and "La Culpa". Now he is actually working with Scott Free and Michael Fassbender in a webseries. |
